OPEN DESIGN CAPE TOWN FESTIVAL

About

INNOVATION / EDUCATION / BUILDING COMMUNITIES

Open Design celebrates Innovation, education and community as the building blocks of a sustainable, inclusive, prosperous society. Design and innovation are the unifying threads that link the building blocks and solutions to develop a better future world. One of Cape Town’s most dynamic design and innovation events, the Open Design Cape Town Festival, brings these concepts together. The 12-day programme takes place from 14 - 25 August 2017 at the Cape Town City Hall (14 - 20 Aug) and during City Activation (21 - 25 Aug) at verious venues across the city and in other communities like Observatory, Woodstock, Salt River, Khayelitsha, Langa, Lavender Hill, Bonteheuwel, to mention but a few.

Open Design Cape Town Festival was piloted in 2013 with the seed funding received from the City of Cape Town. The festival has proven to be a very successful event with and ever-increasing footfall over the last four years. Now in its fifth year the Open Design Cape Town Festival will be hosted again at its festival hub space, the Cape Town City Hall as well as at other venues around the city from 14 – 25 August 2017. The festival hub is also of great significance to Open Design as this is where Nelson Mandela made his very first speech after his release from prison – for South African's an event that signified the starting point of ‘designing’ our newly found democracy.

A critical component of the festival is to make it as accessible as possible to people from all walks of life. For this reason the festival has been set up and is offered with no entry fee. The majority of the events held by the festival are also offered free of charge with only a few ticketed events that are hosted for specific sectors carrying an entrance fee.  In 2016 Open Design proudly hosted 72 events across the 12-day programme.

The following Open Design Cape Town Festival objectives are inline with its mission of curating a festival of ideas that inspire, educate and connect people from all walks of life:
