Woodside Sanctuary

About

Woodside Sanctuary is a registered PBO and NPO that was founded almost 69 years ago, in 1955, by Vernon and Norah Veale after the birth of their son, Barry Robin. Vernon and Norah were among a group of concerned parents looking for a "home away from home" atmosphere for their special-needs children. These parents could not stand the idea of institutionalising their children and were looking for a residential care home that could offer their children a healthy and cheerful alternative to institutional life.

Woodside now provides care for 84 people with severe to profound intellectual disabilities on a full-time basis. Our holistic approach continues to include 24-hour nursing care, various forms of therapy, residential care (full-time and respite), as well as rehabilitation and stimulation programmes. Residents originate from all across South Africa.

Prior to admission as a resident, all individuals referred to Woodside by their medical practitioner, the Department of Health, or Social Services are assessed. A gradual introductory trial period at the Sanctuary is typically recommended so that the Sanctuary can be confident that the placement of a resident is appropriate for the family and in the best interests of the individual.
