PBHS Dixieband & Salon Boys: UK Concert Tour 2023
About
PBHS DIXIEBAND
Since its establishment in 1987, the Pretoria Boys High School Dixieband has captured the hearts of students and music lovers alike, becoming an iconic and beloved part of the school's musical heritage. This dynamic ensemble, consisting of 11 talented young musicians, brings together the core elements of the classic Dixieland ensemble, featuring a traditional collection of clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a grooving rhythm section
Drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of Dixieland, also known as "traditional jazz" or "New Orleans jazz," the Dixieband brings to life the spirit of early 20th-century jazz. Hailing from the southern United States, particularly New Orleans, Dixieland jazz is characterized by its energetic improvisation, syncopated rhythms, and a focus on collective ensemble playing. It's a music style that invites both musicians and listeners to revel in the joyous camaraderie and the captivating solos that fill the air.
But what sets the PBHS Dixieband apart is their dedication to this unique genre. In South Africa, where Dixieland and early jazz ensembles are a rarity, this band stands out as a one-of-a-kind musical gem. Their repertoire stretches beyond Dixieland, encompassing Swing, Blues, and even South African Jazz, ensuring a diverse and vibrant musical experience.
Under the leadership of Dr. Niel van der Watt, the MIC (Master-In-Charge) since 1988, the Dixieband has flourished and entertained audiences not only in South Africa but across Africa and Europe for over three decades. Their journey has been filled with remarkable moments, including unforgettable local and international tours, as well as multiple successful recordings. The band regularly engages in outreach concerts - delighting audiences at old age homes, local schools, and charity events.
In 2021, the baton was passed to Mr. Rikus Coetsee, saxophonist and music teacher at PBHS, as he took over the band from Dr. van der Watt upon his retirement. Since then, the Dixieband has continued to captivate audiences with their exhilarating performances. They have delighted crowds at various concerts in Pretoria and were even invited as guest artists to the annual Mogale Festival in 2022. To kickstart 2023, the Dixieband provided the SA20 Cricket League with their infectious tunes, adding a touch of musical magic to the sporting event.
Yet, the year is far from over for this exceptional ensemble. The highlight of 2023 awaits them - an exhilarating international tour to Jersey Island and London, UK, in October. This adventure will not only showcase their extraordinary talents but also provide an unforgettable experience as they share their music on an international stage.
SALON BOYS
The Salon Boys, established in 2013 at Pretoria Boys High School, began with four talented musicians: an accordion player, a saxophonist, a clarinet player, and a double bassist. However, it wasn't until five years ago that a violinist joined the group and recently, a guitarist, adding a new layer of harmony to their captivating sound. The current generation proudly carries the torch as the third incarnation of this remarkable ensemble, continuing the legacy of musical excellence.
Their name, "Salon," provides a glimpse into the enchanting world of their performances. Inspired by the idea of "simple, agreeable music, often with a sentimental character," The Salon Boys carefully curate their repertoire to appeal to a wide range of listeners. From lighter classical compositions to authentic music from different countries, their music captures the hearts of both discerning music aficionados and those seeking a delightful and uplifting experience.
Guided by their unique combination of instruments, the Salon Boys select pieces that showcase the beauty and versatility of their lineup. They tailor their performances to suit the specific audience they engage with, ensuring that their music resonates with people from all walks of life.
But their purpose extends beyond mere entertainment. The Salon Boys have a special dedication to bringing joy to the elderly residing in retirement centers. They frequently receive invitations to perform at personal concerts, churches, conferences, and charity events, using their talents to brighten the lives of others.
The arrangements for this ensemble are skillfully crafted by their dedicated MIC, Mr. Philip Loots
