The Baby Box Project
About
The Baby Box Project was founded in 2014 as a response to the desperate need we saw in public hospitals, where mothers of newborn babies were often taking their babies home in old t-shirts or towels. Some babies even suffered abandonment as desperate mothers did not know how they would care for their baby. The Baby Box Project collects or purchases baby clothes, toiletries and other necessities and packs them into hampers. We then personally deliver these hampers to needy moms of newborns, in partnership with the registered social work unit of public hospitals in Gauteng (Rahima Moosa, Edenvale, Yusuf Dadoo, Leratong and more). Baby abandonment is a huge issue facing South African society and is fueled by poverty, lack of support and hopelessness.
The Baby Box Project gives a once-off gift of goods to these moms, but because having a baby is a long-term commitment, we also partner with other NGO's who provide ongoing psychosocial support to moms who need that too. Since our inception in 2014, we have delivered over 10 000 bags to mothers in need. We rely entirely on the support of generous donors and volunteers. We aim to give hope to new mothers and curb baby abandonment in South Africa.
