About

Help A Child Grow Foundation
Our BOLD idea!

WE CREATE ENVIRONMENTS THAT ENABLE UNCONVENTIONAL LEARNING!

We create inclusive functional libraries in public schools, programmes to improve literacy and work with communities on the common goal for quality education for all children.

Help A Child Grow is a purpose driven organisation, founded in 2011 and became fully operational in 2014, with the focus on increasing access to books to promote reading amongst children. We believe high intrinsic motivation in reading increases the competency in achieving high readers.

Why the Cook off challenge?
#Cook4Madiba, the event aims to raise funds for Kgotso crèche in the East Rand and an orphanage Orlean’s home identified by HCG and JCPS, which are in dire need of resources for daily operation.

HCG founder Matilda Sekoakoa said, “Naturally, during the season we are in at the moment, we want to sit around the heater; have a warm, hearty meal and – the best part – go to bed early.  But the reality is, not everyone is able to afford that luxury. Their fight could be ‘where is my next meal coming from? How am I going to keep warm this winter? The list is endless”.

From these thoughts, #Cook4Madiba was born.

“Besides the fact that most of us in the organisation love food, we thought of doing something different and fun this year to celebrate Madiba’s birthday,” said Sekoakoa. “We thought of creating an ecosystem where like-minded people are in one space for the same purpose, and what better way to do it than while nibbling our own creations?” Naturally, the best people to partner with were those in the culinary business. “The JCPS is passionate about education and giving back, which align with our organisation’s values. It was a no brainer for us to form relations.”

Co-founder of JCPS Jarlyne Joel said they jumped on the opportunity when it presented itself.
“After being approached by HCG, we realised that we could facilitate an event where we involve individuals and corporates in contributing to society. Our students are involved in many platforms at the school and this is another opportunity for them to get involved with guiding contestants and be part of such an amazing celebration.”
