New World Dance Theatre
About
Company Overview:
New World Dance Theatre (NWDT) is a transformative force in the realm of contemporary dance and theatre education. Co-founded in 2013 by visionary leaders Celeste Botha and Marlin Zoutman, NWDT is committed to cultivating artistic talent, fostering cultural exchange, and championing community enrichment through the captivating power of dance. Our diverse initiatives and programs extend our reach to various audiences, creating profound experiences that transcend the stage's boundaries.
History and Milestones:
Born from the visionary minds of accomplished contemporary dancers, choreographers, educators, and social entrepreneurs Celeste Botha and Marlin Zoutman, NWDT has been on a mission since its inception. As a non-profit dance and theater education organization, NWDT is dedicated to providing opportunities for aspiring artists from underserved areas. In 2014, NWDT introduced the Youth Cape Flats training program, a weekly initiative opening doors for dancers from communities including Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Mitchell's Plain, and beyond.
A significant milestone was achieved in 2015 with a pivotal partnership formed with the Western Cape Education Department. This collaboration led to the creation of annual productions such as "Borne Frees" and "Dancing Against All Odds," integral components of Artscape's Youth Festival. These productions have empowered over 200 youth, especially young women, from marginalized backgrounds. NWDT's resilience during the pandemic showcased their commitment, creating performances that offered opportunities for artists in times of crisis.
Core Components:
- Youth Training Programme (& Borne Free’s Artscape Productions since 2014): Anchoring NWDT's commitment to youth development, this flagship initiative provides training sessions every Saturday at the University of Cape Town. Young dancers from diverse communities receive guidance, inspiration, and a platform to showcase their talents, instilling discipline, excellence, and a sense of community.
- 2-Year Professional Dance Training Program - Youth Dance Company: Building on the foundation of the Youth Training Programme, NWDT nurtures emerging talent by offering selected graduates the opportunity to join the Youth Dance Company. This provides intensive training, performance opportunities, and a gateway into the professional world of contemporary dance.
- Saron Dans (Rural Project): Extending impact beyond urban centers, NWDT introduces the Saron Dans project, bridging the gap between urban and rural talent. This initiative fosters cultural exchange and artistic growth in previously underserved areas.
- Professional Dance Company: NWDT's professional dance company exemplifies the organization's commitment to excellence and innovation. Through performances and workshops, the company reaches diverse audiences, showcasing the transformative power of contemporary dance.
