About
Volunteer Wildfire Services is a Non Profit, fully VOLUNTEER based organisation, that provides firefighters (awesome men & women) to hel fight the wildfires you see and hear about each Summer (sometimes in Winter too).
With three stations in Newlands, Jonkershoek and South Peninsula, we send our crews to help CapeNature and SANParks from Cape Point to the remote mountains in Cederberg.
Our volunteers are extraordinarily ordinary people like you! From all walks of life, diverse backgrounds and age groups. None of us are super heros, we simply all have common goals and enjoy meeting the challenge together.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
Fynbos is supposed to burn, right?!
The truth is YES, Fynbos is a fire driven system, and fire is vital to it's sustainability...BUT...and there is a big but coming...
Too many fires, fires that are too hot, fires that are started by thoughtless humans have wreaked havoc on our natural resources and are now threatening our fresh water supply!
The mountains in the Western Cape are beautiful to look at and awesome to hike and climb...but behind (or above) all of that beauty is an incredibly sensitive eco system that provides 60% of the fresh water supply to the Western Cape. These precious water catchement areas act like a sponge to provide us all with a sustainable fresh water supply...have you ever seen what happens to a sponge when you burn it? It doesn't work anymore.
That's where we come in, VWS is here to form part of the line that stands between our Fynbos system and the wildfires that threaten it every fire season.
Next time you open a tap, reach for a bottle of water...give some thought to those who face danger each summer to protect that precious liquid! Help us, Help YOU!
