More about the artists:
DAVE STARKE:
Dave Starke is a South African singer-songwriter who strives to capture human moments in musical form - to sum up a whole host of thoughts and emotions using just his voice and a guitar. He describes a guitar as “nothing more than a wooden box with strings, tensioned to near breaking point – it’s fundamental, honest and often scary and it’s a good metaphor for the human experience…”
Inspired by the creators and capturers that came before him that poured themselves into paper, canvas, vinyl and clay, Dave uses enough words to get you thinking, but no so many that he tells you what to think. He sees song writing as something of a survival strategy – a pressure release valve that keeps him together.
His music is lyric-driven, performed on guitar with occasional touches of percussion and some very haunting whistling. For Dave it’s all about telling stories, so the voice is the most important instrument and everything else is there to be a support structure for the narrative.
JENNIFER EAVES:
Jennifer Eaves is a folk musician hailing from the sleepy seaside hamlet of Fish Hoek in Cape Town. She has a degree in music from UCT with majors in voice and piano. She has been gigging in and around Cape Town since the age of 16 and has quietly built a solid reputation for crafting meaningful folk songs with strong messages; she is a skilled guitarist and pianist with a soaring vocal range.
Local folk music legend Bill Knight refers to Jennifer as a “true troubadour”, while she has frequently been compared to a young Joni Mitchell, and Irish force of nature Glen Hansard.
Jennifer is currently marketing her latest EP Land of Lonely, which has a strong Celtic folk flavour. She has songwriting credits for a number of film projects both locally and internationally. Jennifer believes that a song should take you on a journey and the final destination is yours to imagine.
