South Easter is the meeting of East and South, like the wind that blows here. It is also known as the Cape Doctor, the healing wind.

South Easter is made up of 3 generations of musicians, Hilton Schilder, Ronan Skillen and Abraham Mennen who fuse their unique sounds and instruments to capture the listening ear and soul. This is where East and South meet in Africa! Instruments: Piano, mouthbow, flutes, tabla, didge, saxophones, percussion.

Hilton Schilder:

Composer and Jazz Pianist/multi-instrumentalist, Hilton was born into a musical family in Lotus River, Cape Town. He is the son of esteemed South African jazz pianist Tony Schilder (1937-2010) and nephew of Chris Schilder of Cape Town’s groundbreaking jazz-fusion group of the 1970s, Pacific Express. Hilton partnered with Mac McKenzie in the mid-80s to form the legendary Genuines, a rock outfit that channeled the folk music of the Cape through punk. Post-Genuines, Hilton immersed himself more deeply into jazz and was a member and contributing composer of Robbie Jansen’s Sons of Table Mountain. In the early 2000s, he performed with the Goema Captains of Cape Town and released his first solo album entitled No Turning Back on Mountain Records in 2003. He was the project leader of the South African/Swiss jazz ensemble Iconoclast in 2008 as well as numerous other international performances and collaborations.

Ronan Skillen:

Ronan has been exploring a fusion of tabla, percussion and didgeridoo by means of a hybrid percussion kit which he designed. Ronan is inspired by the aesthetic of record label ECM, and music from Mali to Memphis and Mumbai. He’s featured on over 50 albums and has toured the world as a freelance musician

Abraham Mennen:

Abraham is a South African multi-award winning saxophonist, improvisor, composer and multi-discipline artist. He mostly performs jazz, improvised and experimental music. Abraham has worked with Louis Moholo, William Parker, Oliver Lake, Joe Morris, John Lockwood, Herbie Tsoaeli, Hilton Schilder, Kyle Shepherd, Kesivan Naidoo, Hamid Drake, Kidd Jordan, Cooper-Moore, Shabaka Hutchins, Siya Makuzeni, Mandla Mlangeni and many others. He has recorded with William Parker and was a regular member of several of his ensembles during his years in New York. He is a member of the Hilton Schilder Quartet and several of Louis Moholo’s ensembles.

He has enjoyed a varied musical career thus far. As a classical soloist, he won gold medal at the ATKV Muziq 2011, Overall Winner at the Wakkerstroom Music Festival 2012 and has performed concertos with the London Contemporary Orchestra, The Royal College of Music Chamber Orchestra, the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra and the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic. Other areas of music include performances with conceptual performance outfit The Brother Moves On (SA), being musical director of the Korean music ensemble Hapum Haneun Hama (Boston), saxophonist for the psychotropical punk band Escarioka Crew (New York), building and curating his own sound installations, and composing and recording for animations, short films and advertising. He is an alumni of the Royal College of Music, London and the New England Conservatory, Boston.

Abraham Mennen regularly performs and records his original compositions with his quartet and has released two albums in 2019, The Really Revered Whole Story and Three Improvisations. Abraham is a founding member and musical programme contributor of the intersectional creative and educational space, The Interim, in Cape Town. He currently lives in Johannesburg.
