JS Bach in Bedfordview

Sat May 2, 15:00 - Sat May 2, 16:30

Bedfordview Methodist Church

ABOUT

Two of JS Bach’s most lively cantatas, set to the well-known tunes “A safe stronghold is our God” and “We thank thee Lord God”, will be featured at the Johannesburg Bach Choir’s upcoming performances.

Cantatas 29 and 80 will be sung by the choir on Sunday 19 April at St Martin’s-in-the-veld Anglican Church, and on Saturday 2 May at Bedfordview Methodist Church. Performances begin at 3.00 pm.

The conductor will be the choir’s resident conductor and well-known oboist, Tim Roberts.

Four soloists will complement the choir. They are: Talita Strydom (soprano), Jonathan Watkins (countertenor), Chris Mostert (tenor) and Hendré van Zyl (bass).

For the Bedfordview concert on 2 May, a 25-piece orchestral ensemble will accompany the singers, while the magnificent pipe organ at St Martin’s, played by top Joburg organist Marnus Greyling, will be the accompanying instrument for the first performance on 19 April.

These two popular works were both composed in Leipzig. Cantata 80 was composed for Reformation Day, 31 October, and fittingly features Martin’s Luther’s famous hymn “Ein feste Burg ist onse Gott”.

Cantata no 29 opens with an orchestral symphonia which is dominated by the organ.
