ABOUT
There have been a tiny handful of seminal guitar players to come along in the last fifty years
that have forged a unique, musical identity for themselves and consequently have been a
powerful influence on others. Zimbabwean born Tony Cox is one such guitarist. Absorbing the
music of his surroundings and his upbringing and using the discipline of classical technique, Cox
forged a new way to approach the acoustic guitar through the prism of the land of his birth and
became so successful at it that he won multiple awards for his recorded works.
Cox's work on the guitar has taken him around the world from the UK to Canada, from Germany
to Italy and to a plethora of other countries, performing up alongside other acoustic guitar
greats. Cox's road warrior days have slowed down a lot and these days he prefers to spend most
of his time at home with his family and teaching his students who dial into their online lessons
from all over the planet. Of-course, writing new music is a constant in his life.
Cox's current projects include teaching underprivileged children how to play the guitar and
understanding the rudiments of music theory. To get this off the ground he joined forces with
colleague Anthony Just and created 'Player Inspire', an organisation that advocates the free
sharing of skills to those less fortunate. Cox spent a year collecting unplayed guitars from his
fans for the children to use and has influenced others to start up similar projects. Other projects
are a new album to begin recording in August 2019 and a book of his guitar instrumentals,
pictures and stories that he is currently compiling.
Tony Cox has semi-retired from the performing circuit these days so if he does appear near you,
do not miss this chance to see a real South African music icon in performance.
'One of the first important non-traditional, South African guitarists’ - Muse
