ABOUT
Meet local activist artists at the opening event of the 2020 Salonfestival Cape Town at the historic 44 On Long in Cape Town's CBD.
Art and imagery have the power to create dialogue, encourage open communication and generate empathy around important topics. Art activism does this ultimately with the aim of creating social change. These topics will be discussed by Sarah Jayne Fell, curator and founder ANON. Pop Up Art Show with activist artists Carin Bester and Lindeka Qampi, photographer and documentary filmmaker Nicky Newman, and cartoonist Andy Mason (N.D.Mazin)
Optional: The salon will be followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary 'Drummies' at approx. 20.00 (Combo ticket R200).
In July 2018 filmmakers Taryn Ashlee Kalish and Liliane Laborde-Edozien spent a month with the young drum majorettes of the Dr Van Der Ross Primary School in the Cape Town suburb of Belhar. Drummies is a documentary about pupils, their mentors and families about their passion for this sport and their hopes to escape the misery of daily township realities. The documentary won four awards at the Hollywood New Directors Awards for 2019. (1 hr)
