Mail & Guardian Water Scarcity: Impact on Business

Tue Mar 27, 08:30 - Tue Mar 27, 16:30

Glenhove Conference Centre

ABOUT

The drought and water crisis is not only exclusive to Cape Town. Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Northern Cape have already been declared provincial disasters. Gauteng has been forewarned of its own drought risks too.

What impact could water scarcity have on your business and what are the risks? Water scarcity can have devastating effects on organisations’ output, performance, influence on business profitability, future growth and ultimately, reduce investor and stakeholder confidence.

Water scarcity does not only impact organisations that are reliant on large volumes of water for their core operations, such as agriculture, food processing and manufacturing businesses. It also has significant impact on industrial, mining and power generation sectors where electricity supply is dependent on water-intensive coal-fired power stations which use substantial amounts of water for cooling. Financial services are also affected when they invest and provide insurance for clients with water risk exposure. Even healthcare, hospitality and corporate sectors are affected either directly or indirectly i.e. disruption in their supply chain, storage, distribution, operations, infrastructure, rising costs of water etc.

With this in mind and in conjunction with World Water Day on 22 March 2018, Mail & Guardian (M&G) will host a timely one-day conference – “Water scarcity: Impact on business – resilience, risk management & business continuity”.

To help navigate through these volatile times and future-proof business operations, M&G will bring together industry experts, government managing water and business community to unpack issues below:

  • How can businesses from across industries become more resilient in a time of water scarcity?
  • How to prepare a water scarcity management strategy?
  • What are the preventive measures and crisis management plans in place to deal with water disruptions?
  • What are the risk management and business continuity framework and principles aimed at coping with the water crisis and ensuring continuity of operations?
