ABOUT

Sunday the 7th of January 12pm-5pm

Join us for an extra festive, not to be missed, coastal forage this summer – we are honoured to have special guest teacher – musician, storyteller and composer – Pedro Espi-Sanchis joining us for an introduction to the musical world of seaweed. On this wildly delicious, fun and interactive workshop, you will discover not only how to eat seaweed, but how to make music with it! We will learn how to make musical instruments from found objects on the beach and be inspired by Pedro’s message that the experience of making music belongs to everyone.

What to expect: We will meet at the beach at low tide, and after a short coastal foraging intro on the rocks, learning culinary secrets of seaweeds, how to preserve and prepare them and learn some of their medicinal and nutritional properties, we will sustainably harvest a selection of seaweeds and shellfish from the inter-tidal pools. Then Pedro will lead a beach combing forage for materials to be used for our musical instruments, weaving stories and melodies throughout. After this we will all head back to the Veld and Sea kitchen classroom to create food on a fire and learn how to make and play your own dried kelp instruments, followed by music, magic and a sea inspired afternoon feast.

What to bring: Beach gear, you r mollusk permit (available at any Post Office) water, your sense of adventure and an appetite. All foraging equipment will be provided.

Price: R650 per person, half price for children under 17, free for children under 2.

Venue: Beach and the Veld and Sea classroom in Cape Point.
