The Mail & Guardian in partnership with Deutsche Welle is hosting a Critical Thinking Forum to discuss Migration and Snapshots from Germany and South Africa.Khadija Patel – Mail & Guardian editor in chief will moderate the discussion.

Sharon Ekambaram, Head of Refugee, Lawyers for Human Rights
Sharon is an activist. In the 1980s she was involved in education for liberation struggles working with young people who were forced to flee from their communities due to apartheid state repression and violence by the IFP. She was a party observer for the 1994 democratic elections as a representative of the ANC in Hillbrow. She also worked with the Treatment Action Campaign at its inception in the struggle for access to treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS, and later worked for the AIDS Consortium. Before joining LHR as the Head of the Refugee and Migrant Rights Project, Sharon worked for the international medical humanitarian organisation –Doctors Without Borders as the founding Director and later as the head of the advocacy and networking programme – The Dr Neil Aggett Unit at MSF
Marc Gbaffou, Chairperson, African Diaspora Forum
Gbaffou was the Secretary General of the Front Populaire Ivoirian youth League in 1991-1993 in Agboville. He started studying chemistry at the University of Abidjan, and became active in student’s politics as he was elected General Secretary of the Student Union in Yopougon 1994-1996. He had to flee Abidjan for political reasons, and migrated to South Africa in order to continue his studies. In South Africa, he studied food science and got a B.Tech Degree from the University of Johannesburg (UJ). He has opened a food company in South Africa. Community-wise, he created the Association of Ivorians in Johannesburg which he chaired from 1999 to 2002. He expanded the organisation, and created the Ivorian Community of South Africa which he chaired from 2003 to 2006, then again from 2010 to 2014. In May 2008, in the midst of the xenophobic attacks that shook the country, Gbaffou formed the African Diaspora Forum (ADF) of African migrant organisations including South Africans aimed at fighting xenophobia and constructing an integrated society in South Africa.
