ABOUT

Women In Tech Cape Town (WITCPT) is using May to highlight the amazing work females are doing not just in tech but to change our country and ecomony by educating as many people as possible how to code! We have three amazing initiatives coming to talk to us about their work, struggles and achievements.

Code4CT
Code4CT exists to see young women empowered to leverage technology for social innovation, so that there is greater diversity in the African tech industry. The program provides high school girls with an enabling environment to imagine and create new technology that is relevant to a South African context.

CodeX
codeX aims to solve two of Africa’s major challenges: youth unemployment and the programming skills gap. We find, train and place entry-level software developers to fuel Africa’s growing digital economy. We build relationships with industry partners, and assist in placing coders into jobs.

GirlHype
Girlhype is a female oriented coding academy formed in 2003 to teach girls coding as a means to encourage them to consider careers in STEM. We offer two types of courses. The first is a three-month-long “Tech Career Blueprint,” targeted at preparing women and girls for their career in tech and entrepreneurship. The blueprints are aimed at designing web based apps. The second is the "Impact Course" where you choose small group classes or a 10-day bootcamp for an introduction to coding.

BARATANG MIYA

Baratang Miya, a self taught coderthe founder and CEO of Girlhype coding academy for women and girls. For her extraordinary work providing access to technology for women and girls, Baratang was named as one of the top three for the 2016 MTN Women In ICTCommunity Builder Award. The US State Department has also recognized her commitment to women and girls in STEM, and invited her to spend six weeks in Silicon Valley with other Tech Women award recipients. Baratang has just been chosen for the 2017 ITS Global Policy Fellowship taking place in Brazil, where she will have an opportunity to work with key stakeholders and government officials. Over the years, Baratang has deepened her knowledge and understanding of tech ecosystems which saw her managing CiTi’s Bandwidth Barn located in Khayelitsha, Managed the BlackBerry’s AppsLab in Cape Town, and has also project managed the City of Cape Town’s SmartCity content development strategy.
