Mozart, Haydn Masses in Rosebank

Sun Jun 5, 15:00 - Sun Jun 5, 16:30

St Martin's-in-the-veld Anglican Church

ABOUT

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart never finished his Great Mass in C Minor, and a complete performance requires the addition of sections from sketches and a repetition of the Kyrie to provide the music for the Agnus Dei. Our performance will stick to the sections known to have been written by Mozart for this work. Interestingly, many parts of the mass were simply reused in Mozart's cantata Davidde penitente

It is presumed that Josef Haydn's St Nicholas Mass was written for the celebration of the nameday of Haydn's employer, Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy, in 1772. This bright, exuberant mass setting contrasts sharply with the sombre affect of Haydn’s Symphony no. 45 (“The Farewell Symphony”). Haydn’s mass includes the sections of text that occurred in each Catholic mass at that time (the “ordinary”). With driving rhythm and a shining G major tonality, the familiar texts (often overlapping) catch the ear anew.

The Choir will be supported in both masses by world-class soloists and accompanied by top organist Marnus Greyling. Tim Roberts, the Johannesburg Bach Choir's resident conductor will be wielding the baton.
