#TechTalkCPT: Using Tech to Map the Universe

ABOUT

March's #TechTalkCPT looks at the UNIVERSE! Technology allows us to constantly push further the frontiers of our knowledge of space. With ambitious experiments like Planck or the Square Kilometer Array, out limits are unthinkable. Our two speakers Pierre Fleury and Marta Spinelli will explain what cosmology is about and present our current understanding of the Universe.

#TechTalkCPT happens one evening every month, where we bring you the bleeding edge of technology, science and innovation as presented by specialists within a field, accompanied by drinks and networking.

PIERRE FLEURY

Pierre is French born and is currently doing his postdoctoral research in theoretical cosmology at the University of Cape Town. With a background in fundamental physics Pierre fell in love with the general theory of relativity, which drove him to do a PhD in the science of the Universe. Besides his passion for the analysis of curved surfaces, he also enjoys talking about it, either by teaching or by public outreach.

MARTA SPINELLI

Marta is Italian, she studied Physics in Pisa and completed her Ph.D in France, where she worked within the Cosmology group at the Laboratoire de l’Accelerateur Lineaire (LAL) in Paris. She has participated to the analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data collected by the satellite Planck, a mission of the European Space Agency.  The CMB signal brings us back to the dawn of time, soon after the Big Bang, enreaching our knowledge on the early Universe. Now at UWC I am working on the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project that will map the distribution of neutral hydrogen in the late time Universe, providing a unique insight on his evolution.
