Help Mercédi fight systemic lupus erythematosus

About

My name is Mercédi Thomas, I am 14 years old. I was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus February 2019. During 2017 and 2018 I experienced some joint pain, a lot of hair loss, rashers and fatigue from time to time. I didn’t take much notice of it as I was very sporty, athletic and energetic. December 2018, school holiday I visited my dad in JHB. During that time my head was painful when I brushed my hair. On the 29th January I was getting ready for school. My mom was doing my hair and she freaked out when she saw a bald patch on my scalp. It was read and inflamed and covered in white flakes. She immediately took me to the GP who gave me anti fungal cream and said to come back in a week. The inflammation went down but my head was sore so on the 13th February I saw a dermatologist who examined me and told us he strongly suspects SLE. I had a renal biopsy and three skin biopsies and a full blood count so they could diagnose me. My journey with lupus has been incredibly difficult. Everyday I would have terrible joint pain and then the doctors said I had rheumatoid arthritis in my body, I also got told I had vasculitis after terrible hot and cold feelings in my hands and feet. For days I wouldn’t eat because of the nausea I would get, I would be admitted to hospital for an IV so I can be rehydrated. I lost so much weight. I developed really bad depression from my lupus and all the medication I would take. I was in hospital at least every second week. I went through a rough time where I had two suicide attempts and I self harmed a lot, but by the grace of God and having friends, family and everyone to support me things got easier, I am now more positive and much stronger. There are some days when I am so sick for days but I have incredible doctors and professors who take extremely good care of me. In May 2020 I decided to shave my head and donate my hair to cancer as I had a lot of hair loss. I want to thank my mother Deidré Thomas for always being there for me, sitting up with me at night when I was in pain or sick and crying, when she would stay by side as we went to the ER early in the morning. She has been with me through think and thin and I am incredibly lucky to have her and everyone else who is there for me.
