ABOUT

The Johannesburg Bach Choir is proud to announce details of its next choral concert season. From the two great Bach cantatas of our last performances we move into the late 19th and 21st century with Gabriel Faure's Requiem and a wonderfully tuneful and rhythmic modern composition by British composer Richard Harvey.

Gabriel Fauré apparently wrote his famous Requiem for no particular reason around 1890. This setting of the text captures the reposeful and spiritual message of the Requiem, more so than Mozart’s and Verdi’s versions.

The second item on our programme is Vespers by British composer Richard James Harvey (b. 1953). This work was first performed by the St Alban’s Choral Society on 9 November 2013, and the Johannesburg Bach Choir’s rendition marks its first performance outside Great Britain. The tuneful setting and innovative rhythms are sure to make this work a firm favourite with choirs in years to come.

The concerts will be at St Martin's-in-the-veld Anglican Church, Rosebank, at 15h00 on Sunday 4 October 2015, and at Bryanston Catholic Church at 17h00 (5pm) on Sunday 11 October 2015. The solo vocalists will be Hanli Stapela, soprano, and Aubrey Lodewyk, baritone. Both have appeared with the Johannesburg Bach Choir before, and their voices are eminently suited to the works.

An 11-piece orchestra, the Apple Green Opera, will accompany the choir at the Bryanston Catholic Church, while talented organist Marnus Greyling will play the magnificent St Martin's organ at St Martin's-in-the-veld.

The performances will be conducted by resident Musical Director, Tim Roberts.
