Derek Sassen Hospital & Recovery Fund

About

Derek is a local South African musician that has been making music and entertaining people for nearly 30 years. Since the Covid-19 lockdown was established, he has been doing live shows on Facebook to raise money (as musicians are unable to work), and has managed to keep his family afloat. There is no income being generated at the moment and the savings are now depleted, and with no clear idea of what the future defined by the virus looks like for creatives, things are pretty bleak financially.

On Tuesday 30 June 2020, a motorist drove into him when he was on his motorbike and he is currently in hospital undergoing bone fracture repair surgery on his leg and hand. The tibula and fibula in his right leg were broken and will require pins. He will require therapy and it will be a few months before he can play music again and earn a living. Thankfully the hospital plan is covering most of the costs, but there are certain co-payments and exclusions that are not covered on his medical plan. In order to cover those costs and some basic living expenses for the next few weeks, we have created this fund.

The last few months have been terribly hard on everyone and we are so grateful for those that are able to help, even through their own turmoil and difficulties.
