The Innovators - How To Adapt To Anything

Heavy Chef's wildly popular evening events are now being livestreamed using the community event platform Crowdcast. During Covid-19 lockdown, entrepreneurs and business owners are requesting relevant presentations that will inspire and empower them for a new, uncertain future.

The marines use the term: "Adapt, overcome, improvise - the way of the Marine". We'd like throw 'Innovation' in there for good measure, and reframe it to "Adapt, overcome, innovate - the way of the entrepreneur". For the final Heavy Chef livestream in April, we're honoured to have three geographically distanced, but instinctually aligned thinkers on innovation. In order to respond to the global crisis we find ourselves in, we need to dig deep. Rob Paddock, CEO of Valenture Institute and co-founder of Getsmarter is rethinking schooling. Professor Rob Lue, Founder of HarvardX, is rethinking education and work, and Miles Kubheka, founder of Vuyo's Restaurant, is rethinking the food industry. We're going to get keen insights from each of our guests as to how we all can adapt, overcome and innovate our way past Covid-19.

Speakers:

  • Professor Rob Lue, Founder of HarvardX and LabXchange
  • Rob Paddock - Founder, Valenture Institure and co-founder, Getsmarter
  • Miles Kubheka - Founder, Vuyo's Restaurant
  • Fred Roed (MC) - Founder, Heavy Chef

Professor Rob Lue - A research and academic, Lue will be joining us from the United States where he is actively involved in converting the Harvard student intake to an online-only environment. Professor Lue is the founder of HarvardX, the groundbreaking dept. of Harvard that offers open online learning experiences and enabling groundbreaking research in online pedagogies. Lue will take us through the process and unveil the quick-learnings of adaptation he has understaken.

Rob Paddock - One of South Africa's most celebrated entrepreneurs, Rob Paddock co-founded Getsmarter with his brother Sam then sold it to 2U for a whopping R1.6bn in 2017. Rob's second act is to redesign the school system. His new venture, Valenture Institute, is a global online school that prepares its scholars to get into the world's best universities. Rob's idea is prescient in the wake of a global lockdown. Heavy Chef has asked Rob to share his thoughts on how he forged such an innovative platform.

Miles Kubheka - Miles has always had the desire to make a meaningful mark on the world and in 2012 he became the first person in the entire world to create a business based on a TV advert. The advert was about a character named “Vuyo” who starts off selling wors rolls from a food cart and then makes it “beeeg”. Miles is deeply concerned about the food industry in the wake of the current crisis and will be talking about the innovative initiatives he's created to solve the sector's problems.

NOTE: Small business owners and entrepreneurs can apply for discounts of 60% during lockdown. Students can get free tickets. To apply, please email [email protected] - let us know your circumstance and we'll send you the promo code, no questions, no judgement.
