Pops Mohamed & Dave Reynolds will perform in Plett for the first time ever. This dynamic duo will play an acoustic set en route to the main stage at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
Pops Mohamed is SA’s leading indigenous-contemporary-crossover artist. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays kora (African harp), mbira (thumb piano), Khoisan Bow, and various percussion effects. He has released 37 albums in his career, won awards such as the ACT Lifetime Achievers, recorded and made movies with the Khoisan people in the Kalahari, and toured globally with the likes of Andreas Vollenweider and Baaba Maal. Recently Pops hosted the TV series Southern Rhythms and featured on 21 Icons.
Dave Reynolds is SA’s leading steelpan player, a SAMRO Award winning composer and acoustic guitarist. He’s performed and recorded all over the world with Andy Narell, Steve Newman, Hugh Masekela, the late Gito Baloi, Tony Cox, Paul Hanmer and McCoy Mrubata to name a few. His latest album The Light of Day was recently nominated for a South African Music Award.
They will be joined by the inimitable Tony Cedras on accordion, trumpet and guitar. Resident in New York, Tony’s been part of Paul Simon’s band for close to thirty years and has also performed with Cassandra Wilson, Harry Belafonte and many others. Added to the mix is Sylvain Baloubeta, an extraordinary singer-songwriter and bass player from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
