WHAT IS A BELOFTEBOS?

Beloftebos is a homophobic wedding venue near Hermanus that is homophobic and run by a bunch of raging homophobes. This homophobic venue recently refused to host a wedding, because the couple are of the same gender and the venue is homophobic, and we are, to put it mildly, not into it. To put it frankly, f*ck Beloftebos.

The magnificent Constitution (and the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act) of this country prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This makes Beloftebos’ refusal to host this wedding not only very rude, but also UNCONSTITUTIONAL. This is not the first time they have refused to host a same-sex wedding and we’re tired of this shit. It’s dangerous.

Why? Because it starts with a wedding venue and then it’s a restaurant. A coffee shop, a pharmacy, a doctor’s office. Then a hotel, a school. A small group of people, then a larger group. A public sentiment, then a legislature. Finally, a state.

Sound far-fetched? Not far-fetched! Just take a gander at what we’re dealing with right now. To quote Charles Webster’s recent EWN article regarding the case, according to a recent survey, “just 56% of respondents in (South Africa’s) most populous province agree that LGBTQI people deserve the same rights as other South Africans, 29% actively disagreed, and 14% think violence towards LGBTQI+ people is acceptable”. And that’s just some stats, which are a useless reflection of lived reality or intersectional oppression.

You can’t mess around with this stuff. We cannot let things that contribute to this kind of climate slide unchallenged.

So, we’re throwing a party, along with our favourites at the Raptor Room – to celebrate our Constitution, to raise funds for the forthcoming case against this junk venue, and to support our friends Sasha-Lee and Megan, who are taking their case all the way. All proceeds will go towards their legal costs as they fight this bullshit up and down the courts.
