Last year, Heavy Chef embarked on the largest survey of entrepreneur-learning ever conducted in South Africa. One of the most studied items on the list of 'what entrepreneurs learn about' was funding. In a series of two events, in Johannesburg and Cape Town, in February 2020, we have invited six of South Africa's most impressive investors to zero in on two questions:

  1. How to raise funds if you're a business?
  2. What makes a business investable?

In Johannesburg, on Tuesday 18th February, we're exceptionally privileged to host three innovative founders who are leading the charge in the investment landscape.

Bame Pule is an experienced financial executive specializing in private equity investments in South Africa. Bame has been working in private equity in South Africa since 2006. With deep expertise across the private equity value chain, Bame especially focuses on deal origination and post-investment portfolio management. Since beginning his private equity career in the United States in 2002, he has gained valuable experience in making and managing investments, building and maintaining top-level relationships, and navigating the business environment. Throughout his career, Bame has worked extensively in the United States, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Botswana. Bame is the founder of Africa Lighthouse Capital, an independent investment firm founded in 2012 to invest in and nurture businesses into South African champions. The investment firm seeks to not only provide financial capital, but also to contribute human and intellectual capital in order to improve the operations and strategy of investee companies in order to significantly increase value for all stakeholders. The firm has a particular focus on helping investee companies expand into multiple key African markets. The multi-faceted investment approach of Africa Lighthouse Capital leverages the experiences, expertise, and networks developed by Bame since embarking on his investment career in 1998 in California.

Polo Leteka is a highly accomplished and experienced entrepreneur and private equity investor. She is the Executive Director and Founder of IDF Capital - a South African based entrepreneurial financier and advisory firm. Through IDF Capital, Polo has contributed towards channeling investments into women owned SMEs across South Africa. In 2015, she co-founded Alitheia IDF Managers to continue investing in high growth businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa that are women owned and led. She was also part of South Africa’s version of the Dragons Den show and is co-Author of a book called “.....and for all these reasons, I’M IN.....”, which seeks to assist entrepreneurs to become investor ready.

Clive Butkow is the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Accenture South Africa, he has 28 years management consulting experience. During his tenure at Accenture (formally Arthur Anderson and Anderson Consulting), he played numerous leadership roles, including Managing Director of Accenture’s Technology budiness as well as Managing Director of Accenture's Resources business. Since being promoted to partner in 1997, Clive led sales for various divisions including SAP, Resources and Accenture’s Technology business, cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset which helped grow Accenture into one of the top emerging markets globally. Clive is the CEO of Kalon Venture Partners (one of South Africa's first Disruptive Technology Venture Capital Fund incorporated under Section 12 J of income tax act). He sits on various boards of the Venture Capital’s underlying investee companies including chairman of two of the companies. During his Accenture and subsequent entrepreneurial career, he modeled and studied hundreds of successful businesses, both corporate and entrepreneurial, to understand and learn the skills and tools that differentiates successful people and businesses from the rest. He also learnt many of his teachings from being exposed to some of the top entrepreneurs and business coaches across the globe.
