In light of the current widespread concerns about the Coronavirus, and decisions taken by several organisations in the community, we have decided to be proactive and POSTPONE SUNDAY’S JEWISH LITERARY FESTIVAL. This regrettable but responsible action is to limit transmission of COVID-19.

Please hold on to your tickets, which will remain valid for the rescheduled date. We will communicate with you in due course.

Our team has been working for the last 18 months and we are therefore deeply disappointed at having to make this call but our responsibility is to act in the best interests of our literature-loving community.

Third edition of the Jewish Literary Festival

The Jewish Literary Festival (JLF) is a one-day event for lovers of literature and Jewish life. Taking place in the centre of Cape Town at the Gardens Community Centre, home to the iconic Jacob Gitlin Library, SA Jewish Museum, and Cape Town Holocaust Centre, join us from 10h00 to 17h00 on Sunday March 15 as we engage with more than 70 wordsmiths, poets, journalists, filmmakers and educators over more than 40 sessions. Our presenters all have some Jewish connection, are engaged with subjects of Jewish interest or have a way with words and, with multiple sessions running simultaneously throughout the day, the organisers offer genres that cover fiction, sport, food, memoir, politics, journalism, the arts and more - a wide choice to suit all tastes.

We are delighted to announce that amongst the list of outstanding authors you can hear from and meet are award-winning UK author Thomas Harding, Australian writers Joanne Fedler and  Alan Landau, Jonny Steinberg and Tamar Hodes from the UK as well as local literary luminaries Joanne Jowell, Steven ‘Boykey’ Sidley, Jonathan Ancer, Alan Paton Award winner Terry Kurgan and many more. Any of our authors will be more than happy to autograph their books, all of which will be on sale on site through The Book Lounge, our associated bookseller.

A fully supervised children’s programme for ages 4 to 11 years old will keep the youngsters occupied and will be held at the Gardens Commercial High in partnership with the PJ Library and in collaboration with Herzlia, Middle and High School pupils.

In collaboration with PJ Library and Herzlia Middle and High School pupils the programme runs from 10h00 to 13h00 but the play room will stay open until the end of the day.

The Jacob Gitlin Children’s Library will host the story times, while other activities will take place in the Gardens Commercial High School - access to these classrooms being through the Jacob Gitlin Library.

Dear JLF-goer

JLF2020 looks forward to welcoming you to the Festival.
There are still some tickets left, so please encourage your network to register on Quicket.
As we are all concerned about the Coronavirus please note  the following

CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS

The Jewish Literary Festival will go ahead on 15 March 2020.The health and safety of attendees is our first priority. We have consulted with experts who consider it safe to hold functions like this in South Africa where only a few cases of Coronavirus have been confirmed, but we are monitoring the situation as it evolves.

We are taking the following precautions to prevent transmission of virus in the unlikely event that someone attending or planning to attend the festival is carrying Covid-19.
  • Prepared meals will be individually wrapped.
  • Bottled water will be available for sale. We also advise that attendees bring their own filled water bottles.
  • There will be a coffee station at which any food items for sale will be sealed.
  • The tuck-shop will sell only sealed items.
  • Hand sanitiser will be readily available throughout the campus.
  • For men wishing to attend sessions in the Gardens Synagogue, please bring a head-covering (kippa/cap) for use when inside the sanctuary.
If you have an acute respiratory complaint – such as an ordinary cold or chest infection – you may wish to consider not attending.
If you have travelled to China, Italy, Israel, or any other country/region that is being quarantined, within the last 14 days, please consider not attending the festival.

DONATE BOOKS AT JLF2020

We would like to assist the Cape Jewish Board of Deputies’ efforts to support a container ‘Hot Spot Library’ project.
If you would like to donate books – new and/or used – to the cause, please do bring books along to the JLF on Sunday and place them in the boxes provided. We will be most grateful … and so will the at-risk youth and community of Kraaifontein.

Sincerely
The JLF2020 Team www.jewishliteraryfestival.co.za
