Who is Abdon?

Abdon is a young entrepreneur coming from Eastern Africa, Tanzania. He is a local crafter and artist based in Cape Town who enjoys costuming, prop-making, mending, renewing, repurposing, renovating and up-cycling. Humble, determined and passionate about his work, Abdon dedicates his time proposing unique handmade, self-designed and hand-sewn products with recylcled leather. As a self-taught artisan, he became a specialist of handmade leather products, providing recycled leather workshops. The idea to organise workshops came from his best friend, Willem Lavanda, who comes from Pretoria. Since then, he takes pleasure in designing, crafting as well as sharing his experiences and knowledge with others. He launched his own brand called Abdon Leather works.

About the workshop

If you want to give tired leather goods new life, this workshop is for you ! You''ll be able to create something repurposed and ready to be used again! You’ll go through the different steps of crafting your own leather product and you will be learning how to hand-saddlestitch a pouch, zippered pouch or wallet – all out of recycled leather! Different options will be offered to you :

  • Minimalisti Wallet (3h)
  • Slim Wallet (3h)
  • Pouch (4h)
  • Passport Case (4h)
  • Earrings and rings (1h)
  • Tobacco pouch (4h)

The leather you will use comes from the factory industry and leather makers around Cape Town (District Six, Woodstock, Belleville, etc.). Shared tools will be available.

What will we do?

At the beginning of the course you are offered a huge kit of different leather materials, a range of color, texture and stiffness. Abdon will introduce different tools and techniques to create your product. Next, Abdon will teach you the suitable cutting, sewing and assembling techniques, so that the process from design to the final product is all yours.

What are the results?

This is the perfect souvenir from Cape Town, that not only includes a great experience and a top-quality leather accessory, but also a new point of view on the connection between fashion and sustainability.

Fees : R250 - to bring during the workshop (and tips if you want)
