Once a year, lovers of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach gather in the German city of Leipzig for the Leipzig Bach Festival. In 2020, the theme will be "We are FAMILY" to adopt a tradition of the family of the great German composer who used to meet every year to celebrate and make music together.
The Johannesburg Bach Choir is honoured to have been invited to attend the festival - the only Bach Choir from Africa to do so. We will join choirs and musicians from all six continents of the world for this prestigious festival from 11 - 21 June 2020.
Today, family is no longer simply a community of blood relations, but a community of people who share the same interests and values - a desire to express the unity of humankind through a love of the music of one of the greatest composers of all time: Johann Sebastian Bach.
We will be singing at a mass in the Michaeliskirche at 09h30 on Friday, 19 June. On the programme are excerpts from Bach's Motet "Jesu, meine Freude" (BWV227), as well as excerpts from "Mass for the First Peoples" by South African composer, Paul Hamner. The latter will be the first performance of this work outside South Africa. We will be accompanied by the Mendelssohn Kammerorchester of Leipzig and conducted by Tim Roberts.
However, not all members of the Johannesburg Bach Choir are able to afford the full cost of the tour.
Through our Christmas concert in December 2019, members of the public have generously supported our choir members to make it possible to attend this festival.
Now we are appealing to you to add to this support by making your donation today. Simply choose the amount you would like to donate from the options given below, and make payment with one of the secure choices provided by this platform.
On behalf of Tim Roberts, conductor of the Johannesburg Bach Choir, we would like to thank you for your support in making this tour possible for our choir members.
