The Event

The great news for guitar players is that acoustic guitar master, Tony Cox has published a book, titled, Fingerstyle for Africa. The book contains sixteen of his compositions that range from intermediate to advanced, and while it is not a how-to-play-the-guitar kind of book, it is a treasure-tome of Cox's signature finger-picking style that has helped him carve his name indelibly into the minds of his fellow South Africans. Any student of the guitar will get years of inspiration from this book. It is also a book of great beauty that blends Cox's love of music, art, teaching and simply telling a story, into a music book like no other that anyone with an eye for something beautiful, will enjoy.

BOOK TOUR 2019

Accordingly, the great book tour of South Africa has been planned. It will see the entire Cox family travelling through the country in a 4-berth motorhome, with Tony and his daughter Thuli giving performances up and down the length and breadth of the land over the December/January festive season. Students of the guitar should take note that there will be several workshops, demonstrations and discussions around the content of the book where and when possible on their journey. All dates and details will be up on www.tonycox.co.za.

Cox will be performing from a repertoire that has a deep well of material to draw from but will specifically highlight the songs from his acclaimed Enormous Flowers album. Thuli Cox, at the tender age of fifteen, has the power to enthrall those who hear her sing. When father and daughter get together, magic happens.

PLAYER-INSPIRE

Part and parcel with this tour is promoting the 'Player-inspire' initiative. It was brought into life by Tony and his partner Anthony Just. The simple premise of the initiative is to inspire musicians and people in general, to teach what skills they have to those who do not have a hope of achieving those skills. To this end, Cox teaches a weekly class of youngsters for whom he gathered guitars, music stands, books, capos and tuners. In so doing he inspired guitarist, Jane Donald from Plettenberg Bay to also open up a class for youngsters. The hope is that the inspiration continues to catch on across the country.

Whatever you do this festive season, wherever you are, if this father/daughter show happens near you, go, you won't be sorry.
