ABOUT

New Music Indaba 2019: Methods, Making, and Materials

NewMusicSA is pleased to announce the 2019 New Music Indaba composition festival to be held at the University of South Africa over the weekend of 6-8 December. This year’s theme (curated by Marc Duby) is concerned with exploring how composers deploy specific methods and resources (materials) in making music, whether these compositions be in the form of scores or drawing from real-time improvised approaches. We envisage hosting a number of workshops, performances, academic papers, and special guests related to the conference theme which is understood as open-ended to cater for a wide range of compositional approaches.

The NewMusicSA New Music Inbada is the longest running contemporary music festival in South Africa. Since the inception of the tradition in 2000 under the curatorship of Michael Blake these yearly events, together with the Unyazi sister-festival, have been the premier showcase of the South African composition community. The continuation of this cultural fixture has been made possible by generous assistance from the SAMRO Foundation, Business Arts South Africa (BASA) and the University of South Africa (UNISA). As the local representative of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), NewMusicSA has also used these event opportunities to connect composers and societies from across the globe and to showcase our talent on a global platform, a tradition that we are proud to continue this year with the generous support of Arts Council Malta.
