Dr Maya Pfaff grew up in Bavaria, Germany and was drawn to the Cape to study marine biology. Between 1998 and 2010, she completed her BSc, Honours, Masters and PhD at the University of Cape Town, studying various aspects of rocky-shore ecology. In 2013 she started working for the Department of Environmental Affairs (now DEFF), where she conducts applied coastal research and co-ordinates a national rocky shore monitoring programme. She is also the co-founder of LIMPET, a youth citizen science programme for rocky shores. As part of her recent initiative to ‘Save the Bays’ of South Africa, she has recently co-ordinated a multidisciplinary review paper on False Bay, which aims to achieve a more holistic understanding of this important socio-ecological system.
