ABOUT
Bergvliet High School's Drama Department presents Bye Bye Birdie.
Bye Bye Birdie is a stage musical with a book by Michael Stewart, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. When rock star Conrad Birdie is drafted into the army, his fans are devastated, but none more than struggling songwriter Albert Peterson, whose song Birdie was just about to record. Albert's long-time girlfriend, Rosie Alvarez pushes Albert to write a new tune that Birdie will perform on television to a fan selected in a contest. The scheme works, with young Ohio teenager Kim McAfee declared the winner, but no one has counted on the jealous wrath of her boyfriend. This musical comedy is loosely based on the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his conscription into the army. It was originally titled “Let’s Go Steady”. The original 1960–61 Broadway production was a Tony Award–winning success.
