French Invade Bootleggers Party
The Bootleggers series of events is back on Saturday 9 May, this time with some international flavour in the form of cabaret rock band The Dark Blue Orchestra from Paris, France and Cape Town’s electro swing DJ JP Silver.
The Dark Blue Orchestra steeps the listener in a cabaret-rock universe both broody and romantic in the vein of Ziggy Stardust or Phantom of the Paradise, with a very refined French touch.
On stage and in the studio, The Dark Blue Orchestra features the semi-autobiographical story of two blood brothers separated at birth: one the hyper-sensitive heir of a local mafia boss and, the other, the disillusioned son of a circus musician, who upon a chance encounter, decide to combine their musical talents and compose requiems to make criminals re-discover their inherent sensitivity.
Musically, one hears Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and The Doors, all arranged with orchestrations reminiscent of French classical composers Debussy and Ravel.
The story begins in Paris in 1997, when Don DiMartino and Salossin Freeman meet and decide to write a body of work inspired by true events of their lives. Hyper-sensitive and certainly disillusioned by what is commonly accepted as “reality”, both indeed compose requiems for the screen as for the stage.
Their first EP produced by Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, John Zorn, Bill Laswell) has enjoyed much success and they are currently recording their next studio album. In Summer 2014 they wowed the public with their first “cinematic" performance at Satourne Traveling Festival and recently at the erotic cabaret, “Le Divan du Monde” in Paris.
After several line-ups, The Dark Blue Orchestra today gathers a fairly colourful bunch: a far-too-meticulous concrete music genius, a frustrated mathematician, two exceptional classical musicians, one rather sour, the other frankly lost, a hair waxed rockabilly thug that swore to change his ways, a nocturnal musicologist and a megalomaniacal poetic justiciar.
In addition, the story of Dark Blue Orchestra is the subject of a documentary-in-progress where we meet the group and discover the complex personalities of its members and their grandiose ambitions, where reality is sometimes stranger than fiction in an aesthetic that evokes Jim Jarmusch and the universe of gipsy travellers, moving forward into the mysterious journey called Life.
JP Silver is a Cape Town based DJ. He has been in the entertainment industry for 18 years, 11 of which spent as full-time event promoter and DJ, with over 1200 gigs to his credit.
Although he specializes in Electro Swing these days, JP can cater to most crowds with a variety of genres. His act often includes guest instrumentalists, visuals (projected or on screen) and dancers (Belly Dancers, Swing or Burlesque).
He hosted The Swing Café Radio show on Mutha (Mother) FM from 2012 - 14, opened for the likes of Just Jinjer and DJ Fresh, been a major feature at events like the City of Cape Town Heritage Day 2014 Celebrations at the Castle, the annual Vintage Obs Day (2014 & 15), The Dusty Rebels & The Bombshells Rockabilly Festival 2014 and the Swingstar Mansion.
In addition to a busy schedule of club gigs, festivals and corporate and private functions, JP holds residencies at the Bootleggers Electro Swing parties (founder), with the Trash Cabaret circus band and at The Piano Bar in De Waterkant.
Silver will be joined on stage by guest instrumentalists Carly Nauta (violin), Zimasa Gysman (clarinet), Gareth Harvey (saxophone), and belly dancer The Mysterious Magdalena, along with his signature big screen visuals.
These two headline acts will be supported by Bootleggers resident DJ Django (electro swing, balkan), as well as DJs Moodswing (soulful rock) and Bitchin (funk).
Pre-sale tickets are R40 from Quicket.co.za or R60 at the door, open from 18:00. For more info email [email protected], facebook.com/TheSwingCafe, Twitter @TheswingCafe or contact the venue on 021 465 2106.
