2 Classic Christmas Tales

Kronendal Music Academy of Hout Bay

ABOUT

So Wales lost to all-conquering South Africa in the semi-final! By way of recompense, KMA celebrates one of the great Welsh writers this month – a reading with live music of Dylan Thomas’s classic story A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS IN WALES, which brilliantly evokes with charm and humour childhood memories that many of us have or wish we had.

Well-known broadcaster Nigel Vermaas will read the story accompanied on violin by versatile musician and singer Brittany Dilkes. The duo first performed the story to a packed house at Casa Labia five years ago.

This time round Nigel will read a second classic story, O. Henry’s THE GIFT OF THE MAGI (now re-titled CAPE TOWN LOVE), accompanied by much-in-demand African instrumentalist Sky Dladla.

After each reading Nigel will hand the stage over to the musicians: Brittany will switch to piano and sing and play seasonal music; and Sky will do the same on her instruments of choice.

Do join us for a very special evening of seasonal words and music at KMA .

Nigel Vermaas is a multi-award-winning broadcaster, writer and director. He joined the SABC in 1987 after spending nearly twenty years in the theatre as an actor, director and writer. After retiring from the SABC in 2005, Nigel produced and directed an African Radio Drama season for Bush Radio, for whom he now presents arts and jazz. He also produces documentaries and drama for SAfm. In 2009 his theatre production of DO YOU KNOW BILLIE HOLIDAY? (starring Michele Maxwell and Mwenya Kabwe) was performed on the main stage of the National Arts Festival. He has also recently acted in a few staged readings including A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS IN WALES by Dylan Thomas at Casa Labia, with Brittany Dilkes. He has co-written a musical adaptation of Sindiwe Magona’s BEAUTY’S GIFT with Neo Muyanga and Sindiwe herself (as yet unstaged); and he is presently planning a production with Rootspring Music of a play with music for 2021.

Sibahle Sky Dladla was born in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Sky is an African instrumentalist, a percussionist, marimba maker, songwriter, singer and bow instrument maker. Sky graduated from the University of Cape Town with an Advanced Diploma in African Instruments and is now completing her Post Grad Diploma in African Music. She is the founder of Blackroots Marimbas, the co-founder of Azanian Aesthetics and duo Indigenous Too. Sky’s main instruments are marimba, uhadi bow, nyunga nyunga, mbira, djembe and kayombe.

Brittany Dilkes is a young, multifaceted musician, having graduated with an honours degree in Music at the University of Cape Town. Here she majored in jazz voice, and piano. Growing up with a love for composing soulful songs has led to a number of performances at various venues in and around Cape Town. Influenced by jazz singer-pianist Diana Krall, amongst other more contemporary artists, her style is rooted in blues. As a young singer/song writer, her versatile approach to blues and jazz has led her to perform not only as a solo act, but also in a duo and trio setup. Brittany’s debut album ‘Walking in a Storm’ showcases her unique vocal, song writing and piano talents.
