Jan skryf gedigte vandat hy kan onthou. Hoewel sy groot invloed Engelse musiek is, is Afrikaans sy eerste keuse. Afrikaans is vir hom heilig en hy is baie lief vir die digkuns en probeer die digterlike eienskap aan sy musiek gee.
Hy was nog altyd aangetrokke tot die musiek van Chuck Berry en die ou rock 'n roll pioneers. Hy’t altyd na B.B. King en Muddy Waters geluister en later ook na Rodriguez en Bob Dylan. Deesdae luister hy graag na Ben Harper, Stevie Ray Vaughn en ZZ Top. Plaaslik is die CD’s van Anton Goosen, Piet Botha en Gian Groen nooit ver weg nie.
