ABOUT

Nicky Schrire:

Nicky Schrire is a versatile and inventive vocalist and composer whose work has earned her comparisons to artists like Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, and Esperanza Spalding. She has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Dublin and South Africa, with musicians ranging from Arno Carstens and Sibongile Khumalo, to Grammy-nominated pianists Gerald Clayton and Gil Goldstein. Schrire has released multiple albums and EPs, and she composes and performs in various genres. Recent highlights include headlining the 2018 Cape Town International Jazz Festival and performing her contemporary classical suite for string quartet and voice, ESCAPE: The Ingrid Jonker Suite at the 2018 Suidoosterfees, the 2018 Franschhoek Literary Festival and at the Norval Foundation in 2019.

Ariella Caira:

Ariella Caira grew up a musician, received a BA in Theatre and Performance from UCT, and returned to her musical roots proving to be one of South Africa’s most versatile and in-demand cellists. Caira is a founding member of Sterling EQ, dubbed “South Africa’s all0female instrumental-pop supergroup”. The trio has won a SAMA award, a Huisgenoot Tempo award and a Ghoema Award as well as landing a major record deal with EMI South Africa (now Universal) in2011. Outside of her work with Sterling EQ, Caira has collaborated with artists such as Jeremy Loops, Markus Wormstorm and Alice Phoebe Lou. Arts journalist Gwen Ansell described Caira as “an empathetic partner, judiciously underlining and

enriching textures and moods”.

Hatchetman:

With the nature of the ever evolving Cape Town music scene, Hatchetman have gone through a number of changes over the last few years. From stylistic changes to members either moving country or following other endeavours. One thing however has always remained and that is the unrivalled blend of harmony, be that three part, or the current two part. The name Hatchetman stems from the band's ability to cut straight to the heart with songs on life, love, and most things in between. The honesty, and a willingness to explore the darker and more tender sides of the human condition, as well as a very personal and human presentation of the same, sets the band apart from many of its contemporaries. Lyrical topics range from heartbreak to a rumination of the multifaceted nature of Cape Town, while musically, the band meets somewhere between folk, rock, funk and acoustically inclined sound. Throw into this a nice mix of covers by some of the band's biggest influences, ranging from Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Beatles, to Imagine Dragons and more and you've got yourself the perfect mix for any occasion. The duo is made up of Jonathan Tait on acoustic guitar and vocals and Matt Catto on cajon and vocals."
