ABOUT
THE 9TH ANNUAL DESMOND TUTU INTERNATIONAL PEACE LECTURE
The Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture was conceived as an annual opportunity to take stock of issues critical to the sustainability of our species and our planet. It is an opportunity to access our adherence to the values of respect, compassion, fairness, Ubuntu and celebration of diversity.
Our family, the human family, is the custodian of an increasingly consumptive and fragile world. The gap in the quality of life between rich and poor is a widening chasm. We are destroying our environment in order to lay our hands on the mineral and fuel riches contained in our soil. We are destroying nations in the quest for power over the resources that we believe will ensure our security.
In a world that seems bent on destruction the Tutus call us to a new emphasis. Archbishop and Mrs. Tutu have been able to articulate a positive vision. The Ubuntu they have articulated and espoused places the emphasis on building and creating. Ubuntu is a key notion in making the necessary paradigm shifts, for it incorporates sharing our common humanity, affirming others, belonging to the greater whole. Ubuntu incorporates mutuality, interdependence and more. This way of thinking engenders the positive and preventative. The Tutus invite us into a new way of thinking about and acting with one another to become agents of change.
The Peace Lecture is intended to stimulate engagement and translate into action the vision and values of Archbishop and Mrs Tutu.

SPEAKER
He serves on several international boards including Unilever, National Geographic Society and the Global Advisory boards of the Council on Foreign Relations and Stanford University. A former board member of the Rockefeller Foundation for 15 years, he also serves as Chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). He previously served on the Africa Progress Panel, and juror on the Hilton Humanitarian Prize.
As a philanthropist, Masiyiwa is a member of the Giving Pledge, and his contributions to education, health and development have been widely recognized. Masiyiwa and his wife finance the Higher Life Foundation, which has supported the education of over 250,000 African orphaned, vulnerable and gifted children over the past 20 years.
Over the last few years, Masiyiwa has devoted his time to mentoring the next generation of African entrepreneurs through his Facebook page, which has a growing followership of nearly 4-million young people from across the continent. For over two years, Facebook has identified his platform as having the most engaged following of any business leader in the world.
