On April 17 1662 Jan van Riebeeck picked the first apple in the Cape. To celebrate the birth of the apple industry in South Africa and revisit the historic apple cultivars of yesteryear, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the largest distributor of South African apples and pears, is hosting a lunch with a talk by authors and apple experts Buks Nel and Henk Griessel.

The lunch, to take place at the historic Grabouw estate at Oak Valley’s The Pool Room restaurant, is on Friday, April 17 at 12.30pm and is R330 per person.

A three-course set menu, tea, coffee and water as well as two glasses of either Oak Valley’s Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot Cabernet blend is included in the price.

Starters will be served on the tables to share with a variety of breads from their wood-fired oven along with Antipasti such as  

a selection of Oak Valley cured meats, pork rillettes, and paté served with artisinal breads, olives and seasonal garden salad
and a meze platter with a selection of Poolroom dips of the day, roasted vegetables, olives, spanakopitas and a mixed grilled salad. 

Main options include a selection from the following dishes
(chips, vegetables and salads will be placed on the table.) 

Oak Valley reared grass-fed beef burger, 180g of pure grass-fed beef, served on a home baked burger bun with Poolroom mayonnaise and their famous bacon jam topped with matured cheddar 

Free range baby spatchcock chicken, wood roasted, marinated with rosemary, thyme, lemon and garlic. 

Vegetarian risotto, an exotic mushroom and black truffle risotto with parmesan shavings. 

Oak Valley pork chops, acorn-fed, marinated in home-made marinade, wood roasted and served with an apple compote.

To end Fondant from 70% dark chocolate with salted caramel ice cream and an almond brownie crumble or Cheesecake, slow baked  with kumquat preserve.

The event will end at 3pm with a visit to the Tru-Cape Heritage Orchard of ancient cultivars on the Oak Valley Estate.
