ABOUT

Die schöne Müllerin (Franz Schubert) performed by Hans-Heinrich Rabe and Robert Brooks for MIAGI

About

Join us for a musical evening as Robert Brooks and Hans-Heinrich Rabe bring Die schöne Müllerin, Franz Schubert's song cycle to life on the 26th of November 2019. All proceeds will go to Music is a Great Investment (MIAGI), a non-profit music organisation. With twenty songs in the cycle, you will be taken on an emotional journey - from joyful optimism to despair and tragedy.

The story follows a young journeyman and his desire to impress the miller's beautiful daughter. The young lady chooses to give her affection to a hunter clad in green. His anger drives him to develop an obsession with the colour green. He experiences an extravagant death fantasy, in which flowers sprout from his grave to express his undying love. The heartbroken man presumably drowns himself in the brook. The cycle closes with a lullaby sung by the brook.”

MIAGI

Since 2001, Music is a Great Investment (MIAGI), has pursued the goal of bringing people together - across all borders - through the uniting power of music. MIAGI aims to contribute to positive social development through its numerous music education initiatives.

In the past 10 years, MIAGI has built, developed, and managed a Music Centre on the premises of the Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto. This initiative was founded together with Cape Gate’s former CEO Mendel Kaplan and the Kaplan Kushlick Foundation.

Hans-Heinrich Rabe (Piano)

This septuagenarian wanted to give up the piano at fourteen, when his father took him aside and told him to reconsider, as musical ability is one of the most valuable investment in one’s life. Hans continued his piano studies.

His greatest musical joy is in chamber music and accompaniment. With two string playing medical colleagues the “Es-dur Trio” was formed, paying dubious homage to Beethoven’s declamatory “Muss es sein? Es muss sein!”

He cherishes accompanying Robert Brooks who has opened the Schubert Lieder, to him. Hans appeared in public with Anneli Cilliers and Heidemarie Ottermann.

His other passions, beyond balancing the rigours and demands of a full time urology practice, are his horses, cars, historical travels, and above all, his

family and grandchildren.

Robert Brooks (Baritone)

Robert Brooks was born in Dundee, South Africa. In 1979 he left the country to pursue his musical studies in Europe.

In 1986 he won an important international singing competition arranged by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, at the Musikverein in Vienna. This success marked the beginning of an international career as a concert-, lieder- and opera singer during which he had the privilege of singing with some of the finest orchestras in Europe under many renowned conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Charles Dutoit, Nicolaus Harnoncourt, Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. He has also performed at many important theatres including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala Milano and during the Salzburg Festival. In recital his partners at the piano have included Leonard Hokanson, Ralf Gothóni, Helmut Deutsch, Ingrid Hedlund, András Schiff and Gisela de Villiers. He is still active as a singer in South Africa and abroad.
