From Home to Ocean looks at how and why plastics enter the ocean, what makes it a huge problem, solutions that are already in circulation and most importantly, we open up the next level of problem-solving: what have we not yet thought of? What other ways are there of thinking about the problem? Come around to the Aquarium to find out just how this plays out...

From Home To Ocean was specially created for the Two Oceans Aquarium by Clare Stopford, an award-winning theatre director and landmark producer of the University of Cape Town's Centre for Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies. Her numerous accolades include the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe First Award and Vita Award for Best Director.

What makes this type of theatre different?

Other than the amazing venue, From Home to Ocean is a "forum theatre" experience. This means that once the actors have enacted a scene depicting an environmental concern, social problem or cultural struggle, YOU will be able to give comment and even join them on stage to reenact the scene with an intervention that you think could solve the problem.

What then unfolds is an interactive, collective re-writing and re-enactment of the script, centred on how and why plastics enter the ocean, what makes it a huge problem, solutions that are already in circulation and most importantly, we open up the next level of problem-solving: what have we not yet thought of? What other ways are there of thinking about the problem? Come around to the Aquarium to find out just how this plays out...

Don't want to be in the limelight? Not a problem, you can be as interactive as you like in a forum theatre or simply enjoy the show!

What is forum theatre?

Forum theatre is an exciting intervention that lays out problems for the audience to solve. A cast of actors presents a scenario that is unresolved and the audience is then invited to participate by coming up with suggestions about what could be enacted differently, either through action, character or dialogue.

What then unfolds is an interactive, collective re-writing and re-enactment of the script which unlocks the problems being discussed and creates a sense of connectedness and energy in the audience. What better way to take forward the troubling issue of plastics in our ocean by inviting you to be an active player in the conversation?

The play From Home To Ocean looks at how and why plastics enter the ocean, what makes it a huge problem, solutions that are already in circulation and most importantly, we open up the next level of problem-solving: what have we not yet thought of? What other ways are there of thinking about the problem? By creating a recognisable family in our scenario which includes teenagers and parents we aim to appeal to young people and families as well as stakeholders across the spectrum.

Come and be heard!
