Durban International Blues Festival 2019

Fri Sep 20, 19:00 - Sat Sep 21, 23:00

The Plant Venue Co.

ABOUT

The 2019 Durban International Blues Festival takes place over 2 nights: Friday 20th – Saturday 21st September this year at The Plant (5 Station Dr, Umgeni Park, Berea, 4001) at 7pm.

The success of the Durban International Blues Festival has slowly achieved its aim and 15 years on, audiences are starting to understand this genre and not confuse it as easily with Jazz as it has in the past! Blues lovers also understand the fact that many of the beloved music they listen to, including good old Elvis Presley and many other popular bands and artists are rooted in a foundation of blues and the most notable example of this would be the iconic "Rolling Stones"! From the early 1860’s when blues was birthed down in the Mississippi Delta to modern day era, this music style has transversed emotions and styles and is evident even in raucous dance music as unexpected as it could be!

The Venue:

This event, majorly sponsored by the KZN Department of Arts and Culture, returns to The Plant again this year, a venue which ticks all the boxes in terms of safety, security, parking and a general all round great and conducive vibe for such a festival,” says co director Tanya van Agthoven Marais. The added positives (apart from partnering with new owner, Lucy Markewicz) include the buy in from the precinct tenants who wish to participate with open stores, street markets, exhibitions and other ways of making this the “vibe “for the two day festival.

Renegade Kitchen will supply a reasonably costed menu selection of easy foods, some with a bit of a “bluesy”twist and two professionally run cash bars will sell SAB products, a possible option of a few craft beers will also be sold at a premium cost, not to mention hot steaming coffee from street vendors just outside or a deliciously fresh and uniquely bottled water from "Not Made in China". The choice is endless...

Added to this will be the opportunity to buy memorabilia, tee shirts printed by Concord Printers and artists CD’s at the Memorabilia table on each night.

Yamil Jacobo (from Argentina) also hand crafts authentic cigar box guitars in Argentina, one of which will be up for auction over the festival period so be sure to come with a few extra Scheckel’s as this could be your lucky night to become the owner of a branded, autographed piece of musical art! Harry Lock, the official photographer for The Durban International Blues Festival, will again have some of his photographic pieces on exhibition – you may be able to purchase a piece that steals your heart.

N.B: While there will be credit card machines in the vicinity, please have some cash handy should you wish to purchase any of the memorabilia mentioned above.

PROGRAM:

  1. Fender Evening: (Friday, 20th September 2019 @ 7pm) will see an impressive lineup of local, up and coming blues talent hosted by Fender as always and is free to the public, so you might want to come early to find suitable seating.
  2. Main Event: (Saturday, 21st September 2019, 7pm) is jam packed with an amazing line up of local and national blues favourites (some known and some new to Durban audiences, but the cherry on the top for this night is the international headline acts, from Argentina, The Yamil Jacobo Trio, who will no doubt have some interesting blues to feed an audience hungry for something new. Also under the International headline banner is Pat Savage from Canada. Some die hard blues fans will remember Pat from his visit over a decade ago, where this internationally acclaimed blues master, larger than life (both figuratively and literally speaking), cannot help but leave a very strong impression on you, long after you have left the venue!

N.B: Both events take place at The Plant (5 Station Dr, Umgeni Park, Berea, Durban, 4001) at 7pm.
