ABOUT

Well known acoustic duo, “Facing South” will be performing at KMA on Friday 30th August 2019, accompanied by special guest guitarst from Berlin, James Scholfield.

The trio will be playing original material from Facing South’s brand new CD. They will also perform acoustic renditions of David’s compositions from his S.A.M.A nominated CD’s “Heartland” and “A Waiting Land”.

This dynamic trio will also offer their their unique twist on popular song and Jazz Standard repertoire.

Dave is a musical wizard who needs no introduction to South African audiences. He has performed with South Africa’s top jazz musicians and alongside Manu Dibango, Jimmy Dludlu, Sibongile Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri and Robbie Jansen, plus many others. Ledbetter has featured several times on the National Jazz Festival in Grahamstown, and was the man responsible for the music and madness of the Truly Fully Hey Shoo Wow band – a popular Cape Town combo. He has recorded 2 albums, and has appeared on countless others as a sought-after session guitarist and pianist, including his collaborative group, Deep South.

Amanda Tiffin belongs to a new crop of jazz artists: musicians who are not only passionate and ambitious about their music, but who go the extra mile to polish their talent through formal training. Amanda graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1999 with a Masters Degree in jazz composition and vocal performance. She has gone on to become one of Cape Town’s best-loved vocalist-pianists, and a respected Musical Director/Arranger, orchestrator and composer.

Amanda has performed extensively in South Africa in numerous Jazz venues, Concert Halls and festivals. She appeared in London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and tours regularly as a jazz artist in Japan. She has recorded 3 CDs, the most recent with her Asia-based jazz trio – the a.s.k trio. Amanda performed with her South African trio at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, 2010.

James Scholfield is no stranger to Cape Town: In his youth he formed the band Wired The Floor with singer Gavin Minter, keyboard player Paul Hanmer and drummer Kevin Gibson which went on to become one of the leading afrojazz fusion bands in South Africa during the late 80’s early 90' and opened shows for artists such as Paul Simon and Eric Clapton. For the last few years James has been touring regularly with Curtis Stigers and also recorded “All Stations” for the Dutch Label “Challenge Jazz” with legendary jazz drummer Billy Hart, produced by bassist Hein van de Geyn.

He has performed with many Jazz greats, including Hotep Idris Galeta, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Buddy Wells, Louis Mhlanga, Wendy Oldfield, Marc Alex and Falling Mirror to name just a few.

Amanda recently joined the College Of Music, University of Cape Town as the Head of Jazz Singing.
