ABOUT

Think South Africans don't read?

Think again!

Join Griffin Shea from Bridge Books on a three-hour guided walk through the inner city's literary history, tracing Joburg’s informal book trade and its rich reading culture. It's a leisurely walk with plenty of stops.

The walk starts at the independent bookshop Bridge Books, before meandering through Joburg's historic financial district, including stops at the Rand Club to visit James Findlay Collectibles, the beautifully renovated City Library, Meischke’s Building (which housed one of Joburg’s first bookshop and is now home to a thriving Nigerian import store), as well as smaller shops and vendors in the Joubert Street Market.

The walking tour also includes a stop at the Ernest Oppenheimer Park for storytelling with Baeletsi Tsatsi of Naane Le Moya, who will tell new and ancient stories.

Free and secure parking is available next to the HomeChoice store. The entrance to the parking is from the left lane of Commissioner Street, just past Joubert Street. (Look for the green alien painted on the wall!)

The walk is leisurely, but many of the heritage buildings require walking up and down steps.
