Many people don’t have the time to stay up to date with the wide variety of news going on in the sustainability/recycling industry. Or even if they do, they often don’t have time to listen to it from other perspectives or have time to discuss it with different people in the industry. As thought-leaders in the plastic recycling industry, it is our responsibility to provide this information to people.


The aim of this workshop is to provide attendees with an interesting variety of topics and to highlight some of the work that is currently taking place, we aim to enlighten, challenge perceptions and help attendees to make better choices about living a sustainable lifestyle.

18:15 – 18:25           Bet you didn’t know you could recycle that - Anthea Fransman, Recycle 1st


There are many misconceptions around what is and isn’t recyclable and this lack of knowledge often leads to apathy and confusion in the space. Here, Anthea will take us through the top 5 items recyclers find in the recycling which most people think are not recycled in SA but actually are, and how you can take part in helping the environment through recycling correctly. 


18:25 – 18:35           Sustainability is not black and white, but 50 shades of grey - Takunda Chitaka, UCT


Takunda, a PhD candidate at UCT, is interested in understanding the waste situation is in South Africa, based on data-driven empirical evidence. People think sustainability is easy, but it is not. There is always a trade-off with any choice of material or packaging – life cycle assessments help cut through the confusion. Here, we learn about life-cycle assessments and why these are so important in determining sustainability.  


18:35 – 18:45           Beach clean-ups and beyond - Aaniyah Omardien, The Beach Co-Op


Aaniyah is the founder of the Beach Co-op, a not-for-profit company whose mission is to mission is to eliminate, reuse, redesign and recycle single-use plastic, which often lands up in our oceans and on our beaches. Come and learn how you can participate in beach clean-ups, choose to buy products that aren’t part of the “dirty dozen”, decrease your use of single use plastics and see what initiatives are taking place in and around our beaches.


18:45 – 18:55           The Sustainable Fashion Revolution – Cyril Naicker, Imprint Luxury


Cyril Naicker is renowned as a dedicated supporter of South Africa’s clothing and textile industry, and of all aspects of wearing Proudly South African fashion. He is also a board member of Fashion Revolution South Africa. Cyril will talk about the power that exists with the consumer and how to use our shopping habits to ensure a more sustainable lifestyle through our choices.
