African Folktales for Children - June holiday programme

Wed Jun 19, 10:00 - Fri Jun 21, 14:00

Jungle Theatre - 3 Marchmont Road

ABOUT

Thanks to funding from the National Lotteries Commission, Jungle Theatre Company will be performing their brand new shows Mantis and the Bee and Dassie’s Tale the very first time in the June school holidays on 19, 20 and 21 June 2019 at 3 Marchmont Road, Muizenberg.

Mantis and the Bee, is a San bushman folktale. The story is set long ago before the earth was formed and long before the first human walked the earth. It explores San mythology and the origin of life on earth. The performance is mostly non-verbal and uses some indigenous language, movement, music, masks and puppetry.

Dassie’s Tale, is an isiXhosa folktale. The story is set in ancient times when the earth was created. All the animals embarked on the journey to share their talents. However, Dassie was too lazy to make the effort and learnt an important lesson about working hard and being honest. The performance involves beautiful songs, expressive dance, isiXhosa and English language.

The same programme will take place from 10am to 2pm each day. Both performances, which are 45 minutes in duration each, will be accompanied by a 45-minute interactive workshop. The event is most suitable for children aged between 4 – 10 years and their families.

Refreshments will be on sale.

Ticket sales will be used to bring up to 60 children per day from our partner organisations to participate in the programme.
