ABOUT

For the first time at KMA Intimate Soirees, two of Cape Town’s most iconic performers will be gracing our stage in one night! Steve Newman (guitars) and Hilton Schilder (Keyboards) will be offering you their respective trio work in the first half of the evening and the second set sees them join as the SoundsCape Quartet, featuring Peter Ndladla (Bass) and Carlo Fabe (Drums).

Influences include Herbs and Spices from Cape to Canary Islands, Cuba to Caribbean, Asia to Africa, Argentina to Brazil and more – so be prepared to settle in to an evening of some of our favourite music, Cape Town style.

Steve Newman co-founded South Africa’s first globally touring contemporary Afro-acoustic trio, Tananas, in 1987, which went on to become a staple of Peter Gabriel’s globe-trotting WOMAD festivals. In addition to his solo shows, he co-founded and played with groups like Mondetta featuring vocalist Wendy Oldfield, the Aquarian Quartet with the late Syd Kitchen, “World In A Guitar” and “Road Warrior” with guitarist Tony Cox, Strings ‘n Skins with tabla-player Ashish Joshi, Man Walking with Kaolin Thomson and, more recently, creating In The Clouds with multi-instrumentalist Greg Georgiades. Now in his 67th year, Steve says, “When I first picked up a guitar, I certainly didn’t think it would take me all over the world. It’s been a fantastic ride and I look at examples like Stephane Grappelli and Arthur Rubinstein who were all performing at 90, so I am sure it will continue for a while.”

Hilton Schilder was born in Lotus River, Cape Town, and grew up in a musical family (his father is the jazz pianist and band leader Tony Schilder). He began playing at a young age in the Kaapse Klopse bands, and in the 1980s he founded The Genuines with Mac McKenzie, who specialized in the Goema music of the Western Cape. He led African Dream and Iconoclast (with Victor Ntoni and Vusi Khumalo) and joined Robbie Jansen in the band Sons of Table Mountain. He also led his own groups, with whom he also performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. His first album, No Turning Back (2003), was nominated in the "best contemporary jazz album" category for at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). He co-founded the duo RockArt with Alex van Heerden, which moved in the direction of acoustic and electronic minimal jazz. In 2008 he was artist in residence at the Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel an currently performs extensively with the eclectic traditional outfit, “Amamthongo”.

Carlo Fabe has appeared in a variety of studio and live settings, performing and/or recording with artists such as The Cape Jazz Ensemble, Sathima Sea Benjamin, Tete Mbambisa’s Big Sound and Mark Fransman, to name just a few. Fabe has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival with Tete Mbambisa’s Big Sound, and with Errol Dyers and the Cape Jazz Ensemble as well as the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Paris in 2009 with Hilton Schilder. He recorded “Bamboesbos” (Cape folk style) with the Delta Trust Ensemble and was part of the live recording, “Summer in Cape Town”, which comprised many of Cape Town’s top musicians. As time permits, he gives clinics, seminars and workshops at various institutions.

Peter Ndladla started his music career at the age of 17 wars I started my musical career MAPP and has since performed with most of the iconic South African Jazz artists, including of Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Ezra Ngcukana, Sibongile Khumalo, Judith Sephuma, Jimmy Dludlu and even the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. Since 1994 he has toured to over 13 countries and in his spare time teaches music at Llanga High School in collaboration with Cape Town opera.
