ABOUT

The AIMS South Africa Public Lecture Series presents a talk titled:

‘The Science of Secrecy'

Simon Singh, bestselling author of THE CODE BOOK (and FERMAT’s LAST THEOREM), looks at the history of codes and codebreaking over the last thousand years.

Bio: Simon Singh is a British author, journalist and television producer, specialising in science and mathematics. He studied physics at Imperial College, London, and then completed a PhD in particle physics at Cambridge University and at CERN in Geneva. After spending six months teaching in schools in KwaZulu in 1991, he joined the BBC’s Science Department, working as a producer and director. He directed the BAFTA award-winning documentary ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem’ in 1996, exploring the world’s most notorious problem in mathematics. His own book on the subject, also called Fermat’s Last Theorem, was published in 1997.

His second book, The Code Book (1999), explores the history of codes, codebreaking and cryptography. He presented ‘The Science of Secrecy’ (based on his book), a five-part series for Channel 4 television in 2001. He is also the author of Big Bang (a history of cosmology), Trick or Treatment? (a critique of alternative medicine) and The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets (which explores the mathematics hidden in The Simpsons).
