Sehonghong Sa Thuto NGO in Dube, Soweto in International Nurses Month 


Cheche D. Selepe will take visitors on a tour of Dube and Orlando West heritage sites to celebrate retired nurses and their role in the community.

*Madie Hall-Xuma*, is the founder of YWCA in South Africa, was first congress Women’s League president, wife of former Congress presdient Dr A.B. Xuma of Pioneer Avenue where the walk starts up House No: 1302. The Dube YWCA building still stands on corner Mncube and Mahalefele Drive. Believed to be member of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, she went back to the US where she is buried. 


*Thandi Klaassen Mpambane* was the first female jazz singer singer in South Africa. She stayed on Mehlomakhulu Street. As a female jazz singer, she was followed and then overtaken by Dolly Rathebe as one of the best female jazz voices.



*World War II Veteran Frank Sexwale* and the twenty guerrillas, five of whom including first premier of Gauteng province Tokyo are his children on Thabo Street. The street has about fifty houses of the 200 that were built for the returning soldiers from the war. He is reknowned for celebrating Mendi Day like no other of his era. His wife Godlieve is called “Auntie” by all children in the neighbourhood even her own.



*Leballo Home*; twice been taken prisoner war during the World War II. Sentenced to two years for the Sharpeville Uprising, today Human Rights Day. Robert Sobukwe's second in command in the PAC. Commander-In-Chief of its military wing APLA-POQO. Potlako “PK” Kitchner Leballo was a teacher, a World War II soldier, a freedom fighter and veteran of the Sharpeville Uprising. He stayed at this house where the uprising was planned and the Mofolo group started early on March 21, 1960.

*The AME* and the first female black graduate Charlotte Manye-Maxeke’s brother – World Wars Veteran Sgt Manye on Butshingi Street.


On Ngwenya Street is *Andrew Mokete Moeti Mlangeni* is one of the first six Communist China trained guerrillas in 1962 for the ANC military wing – Umkhonto We Sizwe. Took over from Joe Modise in recruiting volunteers for military training in Africa. In 1964 he was arrested and sentenced to 26-years in the Rivonia Treason Trial as Prisoner No: 6447/64 in a cell next to Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. He returned – with a degree and post graduate qualification in Political Science – to this home that he occupied since 1954 with June his wife and children.


*Letlalo* Home on Mncube Drive; Sebina Letlalo is a founder member of the ANC. His funeral on January 1981 was attended by over 6 000 mourners. He lived at this house under constant house arrest and banishment. Three of his sons went to exile, two of them returned, Patrick died in Lusaka Zambia, Tom Sebina Letlalo was ANC spokesperson in exile. He returned and lived at this house.
