ABOUT
Music, nature and the chance to experience country life: The Silver Mountain Music Festival is a glorious weekend of fun, entertainment and culture.
The festival brings some of South Africa’s most prominent musicians to this secretive – yet lush – valley, in the Overberg region in the Western Cape. It is organised by well-known musician and conductor, Richard Cock, and a host of partners (including the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy).
And this year, the line-up includes wonderful artists such as:

This is the fourth annual Silver Mountain Music Festival.
The festival has its own Youth Foundation to enhance opportunities for rural youth. Linked to youth day, the festival includes workshops by visiting artists, educational and recreational activities in rural schools.

Purple Explosion, Lavender Farm Buffeljags
Pick lavender on a real lavender farm and learn about this amazing purple flower. Lavender is a special flower which has been used through the ages to relieve stress and relax the body. Lunch and Microbial Magic, Rotterdam Boutique Hotel
A talk on the mysteries of soil and forests with naturalists Coert Geldenhuys and Francis Steyn. Includes a light lunch, including locally produced Stone House Cheese, paired with Sijnn Low profile Chenin Blanc 2016. Enjoy these amazing country delights at the Rotterdam Boutique Hotel, an elegant country retreat on the outskirts of Swellendam. Dating back to 1794, the Rotterdam is rich in heritage and brimming with grandeur. Lunch will be followed by an informed forest stroll with your hosts, Coert and Francis. In vino veritas with Richard Cock, John Rojas and Charla Haasbroek, Schooneoordt Country House
In vino veritas with Maestro Richard Cock, Lucia Scott, John Rojas (Oboe) and wine marker, Charla Haasbroek. This concert features a string quartet led by Lucia Scott, joined by highly respected oboe player John Rojas, to play works by Mozart, Boccherini, Gordon Jacob, and other popular arrangements. The combination of an iconic string quartet with the characterful sound of the oboe will be paired with four flagship Sijnn wines, introduced by the winemaker herself. Creating the Perfect Dairy Herd, Grootvadersbosch Farm and Fleckvieh
Learn how to create the perfect dairy herd and sample different milk from the heart of South Africa’s top milk producing valley. Join Keith Moodie and Thys Swart on their farms as they share the secrets of artificial insemination and cross breeding to produce the perfect dairy cow. Picnic Lunch and Sheepdog Herding Display, Skeiding Guest House
Sheepdog Herding and farm picnic: Picnic lunch and Sheep Dog Herding with national champions. Andrew and Pippa Philip have been instrumental in developing sheepdog herding in South Africa and are regular winners in National Sheepdog championships. Enjoy this fascinating display with a picnic and glass of Sijnn Off-centre 2012 at Skeiding Guest House. R150 for adults; R80 for children (under 14).
Shed Concert: Richard Cock, Rocco de Villiers and Friends, Strawberry Hill Farm
Richard has put together an eclectic programme as usual, featuring ATKV prize-winner Bongani Kubheka singing powerful pieces, such as the Toreador’s song, Granada and Stars from Les Mis, while Rocco de Villiers in “Kort broek en lang kouse” weaves his piano magic with Tchaikovsky, Escape from the Ordinary Life and Music Box Dancer. Add to this the magic of the Silver Mountain Music Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Cock, paired with a complementary glass of Sijnn Mourvedre 2013. The concert is hosted in a farm shed surrounded by forest, this concert is a winner not to be missed. Light meal and cashbar. R280 for adults. R150 for children (under 14). Free for children under 5.
Night Hike and star gazing in the Grootvadersbosch Forest, Strawberry Hill Farm
Join naturalist, Jannie Groenewald, Mike Fabricius, Goliath Highburg and the Grootvadersbosch conservancy guides, for a night hike into the indigenous forests of Grootvadersbosch. Wander through the forests with local experts, searching for the incredible creatures that come alive at night. The forests are home to several unique species, including an endemic chameleon and the Strawberry (Hill) Rainfrog. Meet at Strawberry Hill Farm. Weather dependant, the evening will also include some star gazing with our local astronomer, Wim Filmalter. Dont miss this special night time experience. 3km walk with steep sections-intermediate fitness required. Bring a flashlight.

Brunch and Wander into our Stone Age Past, Paradise Organic Restaurant, Suurbraak
Enjoy a delicious brunch, paired with Sijnn Low profile Chenin Blanc 2016 and a wander into our Stone Age past with archaeologist, Dr Peter Nilssen. Peter is an expert in Stone Age or hunter-gatherer archaeology and has been involved in several significant discoveries in the Mossel Bay area on the origins of modern humans. He will share stories of our species’ origins and where we may be headed in the future. R150 for adults; R100 for children (under 14).
Music Demonstration with Ronan Skillan and Shaun Johannes, Old Chair Factory, Suurbraak
This unique musical demonstration by Ronan Skillen and Shaun Johannes is an absolute must. Explore the origins of music in a delightfully accessible manner, how the bass and percussion mimic the sounds of nature and create rhythms that are in sync with the rhythms of nature and the rhythms of the human soul. The familiar works will be reimagined and designed to enthral the listener with the rhythms of Africa.

Bongani Kubheka with the Suurbraak voices, Community Hall Suurbraak
Bongani Kubheka joins Suurbraak voices and musicians to present Heavenly Harmonies, a programme of vocal and choral music bringing together the talents of local musicians and a professional orchestra to show what can be done to lift our spirits and let them soar! The choir is co-ordinated by Ricardo Januarie, and this special concert has become a feature of the Sunday at Silver Mountain Music. RoccoCocko with Richard Cock and Rocco De Villiers, Honeywood Farm
Over the past two years Rocco de Villiers and Richard Cock have sparked each other off at several concerts and have now put together an evening of entertainment which promises the stars and will deliver an astral explosion of music, fun and lots of anecdotes about life, art and South Africa. With song and captivating piano playing they will take you on an unforgettable journey: happy, sad and moving. Limited tickets available so book soon! Rhythms of Water with Aquatic Experts and percussionist Ronan Skillen and Bassist Shaun Johannes
Join South African aquatic experts for a light lunch and a series of talks on fish, frogs and other fantastical creatures by Keir Lynch, Les Minter and Jeanne Gouws. After lunch, enjoy a light musical concert celebrating the ‘Rhythms of Water’ with percussionist Ronan Skillen and bassist Shaun Johannes. Using their unique talents, Shaun and Ronan will take you on a water journey, from peaceful ponds with frogs, to wild water rafting. The music builds on the rhythms of nature’s water world, from waterfalls to the sea, and everything watery in between Join Ronan and Shaun for this beautiful musical experience at the funky Karoo Art Hotel.
