Evangelical Lutheran Church, Strand street

ABOUT

Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) and Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630) were contemporaries and friends in the early Baroque period, who both composed devotional music for the Lutheran church and both employed innovations of the Italian madrigal genre. Schütz is regarded as the most important German composer before JS Bach. He studied under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice and possibly also with Monteverdi. Schein never actually travelled to Italy but adopted in a masterly fashion Monteverdi’s idiom of dramatic contrasts in texture and harmony.

Five voices of the Cape Consort will be accompanied by organ (Roland Johannes), lute and chitarrone (Vera Vukovic) and Baroque cello (Hans Huyssen.)
